\noindent {\bf How to add Dover paper}
\number{1.}Open the {\sl paper gate} by lifting it up.
Press the {\sl down} button to lower the paper tray.
You may have to press {\sl power on} if the gate refuses to lower.
\number{2.}Take out the old paper and put it on top of any new paper
you add (in the same orientation).
Take up to three reams of paper.
Note which way the arrow points on the label on the edge of the wrapper.
Remove the paper from each ream, recycle the top sheet or any other sheet
with a wrinkled edge, fan the paper on both sides, tamp it even, and
place it in the input bin so that the arrow on the wrapper would face
up.
Put the old paper on top, and make sure the paper is stacked {\sl neatly}.
{\sl Do not adjust the paper length lever.}
\number{3.}Close the {\sl paper gate} by lowering it.
Press the {\sl up} button to raise the paper tray.
You may have to press {\sl power on} if the gate refuses to raise.
If the paper tray still refuses to raise and the green ready light is on,
don't worry---the Dover will go off ready when it tries to print, and then
the paper tray will rise.
\number{4.}If the Dover says {\sl not printing}, then type {\tt p} on the
Alto keyboard.
\vskip 5pt
\noindent {\bf Clearing paper jams}
\number{1.}If you are not sure what you are doing, then ask someone else.
If there are problems at any step below, stop and ask someone who knows.
\number{2.}Raise the top cover, slide the door levers to the left, open
the front doors.
\number{3.}Rotate the red knob clockwise and gently pull out the tray
by pulling on the red knob.
\number{4.}Remove all the paper you see in the paper path.
Make sure you put the plastic fringes on the left back in their slot.
Between the plastic fringes and the tray, there may be paper caught; remove it
carefully by gently pulling up on the free side.
{\sl Be very careful not to scratch the drum when removing paper from it.}
Remove any sheet found on the tray.
There is often paper caught to the right of the tray; remove it trying not
to get ink all over yourself.
\number{5.}Gently push back the tray into place, and then pull up firmly on
the red knob.
It should lock into place.
The rightmost four sensor lights should be on in the upper left corner of the
machine.
\number{6.}Carefully close the front doors---left one first.
Slide the door control levers to the right.
Lower the top cover.
\number{7.}Press power on.
\number{8.}If you can't get the Dover to print, see {\bf Stopping the Dover}.
\vfill\eject
\noindent {\bf Restarting the Dover}
\number{1.}If the dover has crashed, please note the nature and cause in the
logbook attached to the front of the Alto.
\number{2.}There are two alternative procedures for starting the Dover depending
on whether files queued on the Dover to be printed are lost or not.
\number{3.}Boot the Alto by pressing the red button on the rear underside of the
keyboard.
\number{4.}To restart printing queued files, type {\tt \@restart}.
When Spruce starts up, type {\tt sp} to start spooling and printing.
Ignore the ``File transmission error messages''---just type {\tt sp} anyway
and then they will stop.
\number{5.}If the Dover crashes again for the same reason, log this in the
logbook, reboot the Alto (see step 3), and type {\tt \@spruce}.
This will start a fresh copy of the Spruce system, flushing all files
queued on the disk.
Files queued on systems such as SAIL and the VAXen that have not yet been
received by the Dover will still be printed eventually.
\vskip 5pt
\noindent {\bf Stopping the Dover}
\number{1.}This section is for when you want to stop the Dover to bring it
down, or because it is not working.
\number{2.}Please log in the logbook by the front of the Alto why you are bringing
it down.
Also, leave an informative note on the front of the Alto.
You may want to mail a message to {\tt SU-BBoards} at your favorite computer.
\number{3.}If the Dover is spooling, type {\tt s} to stop spooling.
\number{4.}Type {\tt r} followed by the reason the Dover is down (followed
by a carriage return).
\number{5.}If the Dover is printing, wait until you get the message {\tt queue
0\%\ full} before continuing with the next step.
\number{6.}If you want to stop Spruce, type {\tt q} followed by carriage
return.
\number{7.}After stopping Spruce, type {\tt q} followed by carriage
return to load DMT.
\vfill\eject
\noindent {\bf Problems and Their Resolution}
\number{1.}You see the message ``File transmission error'' repeatedly appearing
on the screen.
This usually means that {\sl spooling} is turned off.
Type {\tt s} to start spooling.
\number{2.}You see an {\tt E} in the center of the screen but nothing much
is happening except for occasional blinks of the screen.
The Dover Alto is receiving a file (albeit slowly) from some host.
Spooling has priority over printing, so the file to be printed next will have
to wait for the file being transmitted to finish.
\number{3.}You just added paper or cleared a jam, but the paper tray won't
raise.
Try pushing power on, making sure the front doors are closed, and
otherwise reading the Dover.
If this doesn't work, get help.
\number{4.}You get a page with a strange pattern of dots instead of one or
more of the pages of your output.
This is a timing problem; your output page is at the limits of the complexity
of the hardware, and the software doesn't realize it.
Try simplifying the page and see number 5 below.
\number{5.}You get vertical bands through your page, which otherwise prints
normally.
The Dover prints by sorting the characters by horizontal position on the page.
You probably have too many characters that start the same distance in from the
left margin.
Try distributing them a little bit or printing the page in parts.
\vskip 5pt
\noindent {\bf Other maintenance activities}
should only be done by people specially trained to maintain the Dover.
If you have any questions about this policy, speak to Ralph Gorin or Len
Bosack.
Xerox Co.\ maintains the hardware; no one is currently maintaining the
software; Joe Weening and Arthur Keller maintain the fonts.
